Our stay in a Castle

Of all of the places I have stayed, this one has been the most exciting! From the day I booked Ayton Castle Gatehouse, I have looked forward to arriving but it has exceeded our expectations and I cannot imagine a better place to spend our anniversary.

The mini castle has a romantic feel to it with flowers arranged by the lovely manager Diana, a cosy log burner and a spiral staircase leading to the bedroom with lovely views towards the main castle and across the countryside. It has a cute garden hidden from the road by the castle walls but open enough to watch out for the surrounding deer whilst enjoying a glass of bubbly.

The manager, with her passion and enthusiasm for the gategouse is full of knowledge and suggestions for the local area. From sneaking a peek at the main castle with its glorious peacocks, to restaurant suggestions; we couldn't fit them all in meaning we will definitely have to return.

It was optional to act as the gatehouse keeper whilst staying, if like me you would find that exciting.

We enjoyed a day out to Lindisfarne, a tidal island a 20 minute drive from the gatehouse. Also known as The Holy Island because of its priory and fabulous church. The island is walkable via it's causeway known as pilgrims way but be sure to check the tide times. See my previous blog here for other things to see on the island

A peaceful, stunning location with a touch of magic. I don't see how it could disappoint anybody! Bookable on Air b 'n' b.

Recommendations:

The queens head in Berwick offers pub-style food, well behaved dogs are welcome but booking recommended to the nicely furnished restaurant.

Coldingham beach is fabulous and great for surfing, or just to watch.
